While most folks were sleeping, former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor put a tweet out saying that he has retired from MMA. Below is the quotation from his tweet:
“Hey guys quick announcement, I have decided to retire from the sport formally known as”Mixed Martial Art” today. I need of my coworkers that are old well going forward in contest. I join my spouses on this venture, already in retirement. Suitable Pina Coladas on me fellas!”
At first glance, it’s hard to choose McGregor seriously. This is not the first time. Another time he tweeted something similar came after he was filed by Nate Diaz at a shocker at UFC 196. Only a couple of months after tweeting he had been back in the cage, winning a vast majority decision over Diaz at UFC 202. So whenever McGregor tweets some thing about retiring from MMA, then you have to keep in mind he has pulled this stunt before.
At second glance, however, there might be something more to this. After all, McGregor doesn’t need MMA anymore. It’s just a matter of whether he has that burning passion to step in the cage, as far as finances go, he is set for life. The Floyd Mayweather boxing superfight at 2017 made McGregor up of $100 million, which financial windfall help set him up for success using Proper 12 whiskey. McGregor does not really truly”need” MMA anymore. But he is a competitor, and he probably does not want to venture out on a devastating entry loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in his final bout, not to mention all the shenanigans that went along with it.
This all could be a negotiating strategy by McGregor if anything. It is smart for McGregor to capture the eye of MMA fans and media. He has not even fought in nearly a year and yet remains talked about more than almost any other fighter. He is clearly a very wise man. The UFC has had talks with McGregor about coming at UFC 239 in a co-main event bout against Nate Diaz, but McGregor was adamant he wants to fight in the main event, and it seems that is in the crux of his own beef with UFC president Dana White and co.. This could be McGregor posturing and trying to acquire the UFC to call his bluff, but it remains to be seen.
With no McGregor, the UFC will need to proceed and book UFC 239 with no as a potential fight. The rumors are that the UFC wants to perform Daniel Cormier from Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in the main event, and there are plenty of different options for your card including Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington for the UFC welterweight title. Just as the fans need to view McGregor return and fight someone like Diaz, as far as it appears like the promotion demands McGregor, they really don’t, along with the UFC’s well-oiled machine will probably continue to move forwards with or without the Irish superstar.
